Influenced by the Cubist movement, playing with spatial perception is something I've always loved. The tension between the dimensional outline of an object against a flat background creates a tension that brings the work to life. Together the black line tells the story and the color fields give a sense of place even if nothing ever fits quite right. In this piece, I also explored the dimensional aspect of the substrate by wrapping the line around the edges of the cradled wood, continuing the image beyond its primary surface giving the object a faux sense of depth. The Eames chair is one of those icons of California culture, a nod to Mid Century design and a time of great artistic exploration. Here the empty chair sits waiting for interaction where color fields suggest a room, allowing the viewer to appreciate form over function.
